When senior biochemistry major Mason Zuelzke first arrived at Samford University, he planned to pursue medical school. But, through hands-on experiences and meaningful mentorship, his calling took a new direction.

Now, as the recipient of the 2026 Morgan Ponder Outstanding Senior Award in chemistry and biochemistry, Zuelzke is preparing to continue his academic journey in a PhD program in biochemistry at the University of Florida.

“I was initially drawn to Samford with the hopes of going to medical school, but that path shifted when I discovered how much I enjoy learning and teaching chemistry,” Zuelzke said. “This was primarily because of all the opportunities I’ve had at Samford like researching, tutoring and being a lab assistant.”

Zuelzke said those opportunities played a defining role in shaping his academic and professional goals. Over the course of three years, he engaged in undergraduate research, an experience he describes as both formative and uncommon.

“Having the opportunity to perform three years of research during my time at Samford is such a unique opportunity that many universities do not offer,” he said. “The research that I’ve performed, along with the constant mentorship from faculty, has inspired me to become a professor.”

That mentorship, paired with strong relationships among peers and professors, contributed to a sense of community that Zuelzke says made his time at Samford especially meaningful. Receiving the department’s top senior honor, he added, is a reflection of that support.

“Receiving this award is an amazing way to wrap up my Samford experience,” Zuelzke said. “I’m very grateful to our chemistry faculty, as it reflects the level of support I’ve received from all of my professors and peers.”

This fall, Zuelzke will begin his doctoral studies at the University of Florida, where he looks forward to deepening his knowledge of biochemistry while embracing a new environment.

“I’m excited to live somewhere new while also having the opportunity to study something I’m so passionate about,” he said.

As he looks ahead, Zuelzke hopes to carry forward not only the academic preparation he received at Samford but also the personal and spiritual growth that defined his college experience.

“I’ve formed so many amazing relationships over my four years at Samford and have grown so much closer to the Lord,” he said. “I’m excited to one day have the opportunity to mentor students and be a Christian resource in a world that desperately needs more of that.”

With a clear sense of purpose and a commitment to both scholarship and service, Zuelzke represents the kind of student Samford strives to develop—one prepared to lead, teach and make a lasting impact.
