Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences recognized four faculty and staff members for excellence in teaching, scholarship, advising and service during its April faculty meeting, celebrating their meaningful contributions to student success and the life of the college.

Tim Sutton, professor of English, received the Dean’s Teaching Award for his classroom engagement and commitment to integrating faith and learning. Sutton, who also serves as director of the Writing Center and acting chair of the Department of English, was praised for fostering deep student connection to course material.

During remarks, the dean recalled observing Sutton’s class in session: “They didn’t even see me because they were all so glued to literature.” Student feedback echoed that impact, with one noting the course “deeply benefited me on a spiritual level,” adding that Sutton helps students walk away “with not only knowledge, but also wisdom.”

Molly Lockart, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was honored with the Dean’s Scholarship Award for her research and commitment to student development. A rising scholar in her field, Lockart has contributed to more than 20 academic publications early in her career and recently secured a $55,000 grant from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund.

Her work increasingly incorporates artificial intelligence into research alongside students—an effort the dean described as “very exciting” and impactful not only for advancing knowledge, but also for shaping student learning experiences.

The Excellence in Academic Advising Award was presented to Scott Crews, instructor of mathematics and computer science, in recognition of his relational and student-centered approach to advising. A student who nominated Crews credited him with helping her confidently navigate her academic path and ultimately decide to remain at Samford.

“He helped me understand how important my concentration is in the eyes of a potential employer,” she said. “Every time I met with him, I understood what he was saying and didn’t feel stressed at all about my schedule.”

Crews’ work reflects a broader culture of care in advising across Howard College. As one presenter noted, while degree planning is essential, “being able to form a relationship with our students…we get the opportunity to be a part of somebody else’s success.”

Adelyn Trautwein, administrative assistant to the dean, received the Outstanding Staff Award for her wide-ranging contributions to the college. Though much of her work happens behind the scenes, her impact is felt across nearly every aspect of Howard College operations.

“So much of what we do as a college really has her touch on it,” the dean said, citing her support in areas ranging from facilities and event coordination to faculty collaboration and alumni engagement. “Her efforts go well beyond the call of duty.”

In addition to the major awards, several faculty and staff members were recognized with certificates for their leadership and service on committees supporting general education curriculum development and other key initiatives. The dean expressed deep gratitude for the collective effort, noting the significant time and energy invested across the college.

Together, the awards and recognitions highlighted a shared commitment among Howard College faculty and staff to academic excellence, student support and the integration of faith and learning.
