Medication errors continue to be a major problem in the U.S. health care system, and account for 7,000-9,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. Furthermore, it is estimated that many, many more patients experience adverse health consequences associated with medication errors. Now, more than ever, prevention of medication errors is important as more high risk, specialty and injectable medications are approved for use in patients.  The purpose of this activity is to review general medication safety concepts and then provide pharmacy technicians with tools and resources to identify potentially dangerous situations, alert other pharmacy personnel, and develop and implement solutions to optimize medication outcomes.
