Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy placed in the top 9% of pharmacy programs nationwide in Phase I of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists residency match.
Among Samford’s fourth-year Doctor of Pharmacy students, 27 matched with Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) residencies, while participating graduates recorded a 100% Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) match rate, underscoring the school’s strength in advanced residency placement. Students and graduates matched with PGY1 and PGY2 residencies in 13 states, pursuing specialties including internal medicine, pediatrics, infectious diseases, emergency medicine, pain management, oncology and organ transplant.
While Doctor of Pharmacy graduates are not required to complete a residency to enter practice, residency programs provide mentoring, additional training and hands-on experience in specialized areas of pharmacy.
“We are extremely proud of the residency match results,” said interim dean Mike Kendrach.“This demonstrates the pharmacy program’s strong commitment of faculty and preceptors to prepare pharmacists who are practice and team-ready. We wish all graduates the best in their practice.”
For applicants who do not initially match, phase two of the pharmacy residency match offers a second opportunity to secure remaining PGY1 and PGY2 positions.
Samford University is ranked #3 in the nation for career preparation in the The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026 Best Colleges list, highlighting the university’s strong focus on networking, career support and applied learning.
