Colleagues,

As we shared last week, COVID-19 testing will be required of all employees (and students) prior to the August 17th full return to campus. Testing is paid for by the university and will begin this week utilizing the Everlywell home collection molecular PCR test. This test detects the presence or absence of the virus that causes COVID-19. All employees have been designated a time to come to campus to pick up a test kit; please carefully review the schedule provided below and make plans to pick up your kit this week. Everlywell has indicated anyone currently exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will not be eligible for testing through their program. Your fellow employees at the pick-up site are not equipped with the same level of PPE and safeguards as an official COVID-19 test site. Therefore, if you have symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your health care provider immediately and do not risk exposure of a fellow employee by going to the home test pick-up site.

Once you have your kit, you will register it online and then follow the included step-by-step instructions for properly collecting and returning your sample. This short instructional video describes the process you will follow. Your test sample will be collected at home using a short nasal swab. It is important to note that your test sample must be returned to a UPS dropbox on the same day as sample collection. A prepaid shipping label will be included in your kit. Your results will be available online 24-48 hours after the test sample arrives at the lab. Results are automatically reported to the appropriate state and local agencies and to Human Resources.

Those who test negative will be permitted to return to campus. Those who test positive must isolate 10 days from the date of the positive test if asymptomatic, or for 10 days from the onset of symptoms, and be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to campus.

Testing kits must be picked up at the Academy of the Arts according to the schedule listed below. The address for this building is: 1939 S Lakeshore Drive Birmingham, AL 35209. Employees should bring their employee ID to confirm identity, and must retrieve their test in person. You must access the Academy of the Arts from Old Montgomery Highway/South Lakeshore Drive only and enter at the Academy of the Arts east gate (by the Army National Guard Recruiter office, also known as “Armory”) and stay in your car to pick up your test. You will then exit through the Academy of the Arts west gate, and turn left to exit back to Lakeshore Drive. Note you can’t enter through the Soccer Track and Soccer complex as that road will be closed for construction work.

If an employee is unable to retrieve their test at the appointed time, there is an alternative time at Academy of the Arts available from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Friday, August 7th, or if necessary, the test may be retrieved from Wade Walker in 301 Samford Hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, August 10th or Tuesday, August 11th. All testing must be completed and mailed in via UPS to Everlywell no later than Wednesday, August 12th. For any faculty who will be out of town through August 11th and unable to retrieve their test, please email your mailing address to Senior Associate Provost Howard Finch at hfinch@samford.edu and the testing kit will be mailed to you.

We appreciate your assistance with this process. In case of questions or concerns, contact Human Resources at HR@samford.edu.
