Step Sing 2018
Step Sing began as a sing-along on the steps of Renfroe Hall at the Howard College East Lake Campus in 1951. It was held once a semester and soon became a competition. In 1957, Howard College moved to its present location on Lakeshore Drive, bringing with it the tradition of Step Sing. In 1976, Step Sing moved to its current home in Wright Center Concert Hall.
Under the direction of the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Student Activities and Events, Step Sing is organized by students, including musical arrangement, choreography and costume design. Step Sing has become an educational activity in which students participate through leadership development, organizational administration and time management. Students perform three days to sold-out audiences. It continues to be one of Samford's most popular traditions, and is a popular event not only among students, but also prospective students, employees, alumni and the Birmingham community.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Step Sing 2018! My name is ________________ and we are thrilled you are here to join us for the 68th production of one of Samford University’s most beloved traditions.
A tradition that begin in 1951 on the steps of Renfroe Hall at Howard College has now embedded itself into the Samford community. What began with simple arm movements has now transformed into full-length choreography. Groups from around campus come together for the opportunity to perform on the Step Sing stage. The directors have been working for months to prepare a six-minute show and have been leading their groups through practice the last three weeks. Tonight, we will see all of the hard work come to fruition.
Before we begin, I want to remind you of a few house rules:
- Please silence your cell phones.
- No filming or flash photography.
- In case of an emergency, the house lights will come up and instructions will be given.
Tonight, in the largest Step Sing production to date, we have over eleven hundred students participating on stage and behind the scenes to make Step Sing 2018 a reality. We are thrilled to welcome students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni joining us both in the house and on the live stream. Let us know you are watching by interacting with us on social media using the hash tag StepSing2018.
Let’s get started with our first show of the night!”
Shauna’s HouseThe 2017 Step Sing Philanthropy was Shauna’s House through Lifesong for Orphans.
Many children that live in orphanages in Ukraine have no hope of ever being adopted. To connect with these children, Lifesong has built a partnership within the Ukrainian orphanages improving the living conditions and helping provide for the children’s basic needs.
In memory of Shauna Yelton, Shauna’s House will be one of 5 transition homes for Ukrainian orphanage graduates through Lifesong for Orphans.
Thank you for your donations to the Step Sing 2017 Philanthropy, Shauna's House! Together we raised over $14,000.
