Michael J. (Mickey) Newsome, president and chief executive officer of Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc., has been named Alumnus of the Year by the Samford University School of Business.

Newsome, a 1962 Samford graduate, joined the Hibbett company in 1965. President and chief operating officer since 1981, he was named to his present post in 1999.

"Mickey Newsome's entire career has been spent building Hibbett into a wonderful success story in sports retailing," said Samford School of Business Dean Dr. Carl J. Bellas. "We are pleased to be able to recognize his accomplishments with this award."

A board member of the National Sporting Goods Association, Newsome served as board chairman in 1989. He is also on the board of SportsTrend magazine.

Newsome is a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the Birmingham Touchdown Club.

Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc., is a chain of 280 small-market sporting goods stores located in 20 states.
