Samford University’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter has received the Bronze Award from national Alpha Lambda Delta. This award honors the Samford chapter for inducting 76.4 percent of invited students into its chapter during the 2015–16 school year.

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for freshman students who were in the top 20 percent and had a grade point average of 3.8 or higher at the conclusion of the fall semester.

Alpha Lambda Delta’s mission is “to encourage superior academic achievement among students in their first year in institutions of higher education, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their roles in society.”

“Getting an award like this really goes to show the hard work and effort that we’ve put into reaching out to these students about Alpha Lambda Delta,” said Sarah Chase Rabiee, administrative assistant to the assistant dean in Howard College of Arts and Sciences. “It shows the quality of the Samford student body in general, especially with these freshmen who want to be a part of it. They get that this is a huge honor.”

Samford’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter currently has 362 members and is under the leadership of faculty adviser Ashley George, assistant professor of communication studies, and administrative adviser Dana Basinger, assistant dean of Howard College of Arts and Sciences.

Officers are President Austin Chapman, a biology major from Mountain Brook, Alabama; Vice President Ann Potter, a history major from Chattanooga, Tennessee; Secretary/Webmaster Josey Hartley, a nutrition and dietetics major from Pewaukee, Wisconsin; and Sophomore Vice President Jonathan Punt, a religion major from Tavares, Florida.

“I’m thrilled that Samford’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter was recognized for this prestigious award,” said George. “To be invited to this honor society is a remarkable accomplishment early in a student’s academic career, and our chapter’s involvement and presence on campus is at the heart of why so many students are eager to join once invited.

“I’m very proud of our chapter officers and members. They are a highlight of this campus, and this award is further recognition of their outstanding academic abilities and work ethic.”
