Samford University’s Department of Religion will host Fisher Humphreys, Samford emeritus professor of divinity, for the 2018 Holley-Hull Lectures Oct. 16-18.

Humphreys taught Christian theology at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1970-1990 and at Samford’s Beeson Divinity School from 1990-2008. He is the author of The Almighty, Baptist Theology: A Really Short Version, The Christian Church, The Death of Christ, A Dictionary of Doctrinal Terms (with Philip Wise), Fundamentalism (also with Philip Wise), God So Loved the World (with Paul Robertson), The Heart of Prayer, I Have Called You Friends, The Nature of God, Southern Baptist Heritage, Speaking in Tongues (with Malcolm Tolbert), Thinking about God, Thinking about God at St. Mary’s, and The Way We Were.

Humphreys also is the editor of Nineteenth Century Evangelical Theology. He contributed numerous articles and reviews to various journals and has written lessons for use in Sunday school and in other settings.

Returning to Samford, Humphreys will present three lectures on the theme of “The Purposes of God,” at venues on and off campus. The free lectures are open to the public in all venues.

The Howard L. and Martha H. Holley Lectures: New Testament Voices for a Contemporary World in Honor of Dr. William E. Hull are given each fall. Hull was a Baptist minister and New Testament scholar who served Samford as provost from 1987 to 1996, as university professor from 1996 to 2000, and as research professor until his death in 2013. He also served as theologian-in-residence at Mountain Brook Baptist Church from 1991 to 2013. The Holleys were members of the church.
