Juried ArtBT

Samford University’s School of the Arts Division of Art and Design honored students and announced the winners of the annual Juried Art and Design Show at a reception last Thursday in the Art Gallery. This year’s show included a diverse display of drawings, photography, mixed-media, floor plans, sculpture and typography that represented graphic design, interior architecture and art majors. Students also received recognition for academic performance and scholarship awards.

This year’s show was curated by Samford art and design faculty and the award winners were chosen by a guest juror from the local art and design community. According to Assistant Professor and gallery coordinator Stephen Watson, “Because the 21 works in this show are hand-picked by our faculty, this exhibit highlights the very best work from our classes this year.”

The winning piece, “Potted Pants” by Marlee Lackore, was selected for its balance between playfulness and serious craftsmanship.

The juried show was underwritten by Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman. The year-long Art and Design Series was sponsored by John and Marsha Floyd. John Floyd was on hand and presented with a piece of work by junior Braylen Gage as a thanks for their annual support. Winners were also awarded gift certificates to Alabama Art Supply.

Senior student work will continue to be displayed in the gallery with a reception following commencement on May 11.

The Dean’s awards select students’ work from the show to be displayed in the Dean’s office during the next school year. Winners include Aspen Herzog, "Untitled," Katie Roth, "Vintage Piano," and Katie Hill, "The Haven Project."
