At Samford University, support for student-athletes extends far beyond the sidelines. Through meaningful collaboration between Samford Parents Association and the Department of Athletics, families play an active role in fostering a culture of encouragement and faith across the university’s athletic programs, strengthening the student-athlete experience, both in competition and beyond.
Samford parents are among the most dedicated supporters of the university’s athletic programs. From filling the stands at Seibert Stadium and Pete Hanna Center to traveling across the region for conference matchups, parents consistently show up—not only for their own students, but for all athletes. Their involvement reflects a shared belief in Samford’s mission to develop student athletes academically, athletically and spiritually.
In response to this shared commitment, a group of parent leaders intentionally formed a committee to explore new ways to better support Samford’s student-athletes, generating ideas that range from increasing game-day attendance and social media engagement to organized prayer efforts and sending handwritten notes of encouragement to athletes and coaches.
That mission is reinforced through intentional parent-focused initiatives designed to deepen engagement and connection. Athletics regularly partners with parents to encourage prayer and spiritual support for student-athletes, recognizing the unique pressures they face balancing competition, academics and personal growth. By equipping families with ways to pray for teams and individual athletes, Samford strengthens its foundation of faith-centered support.
Parent involvement at Samford also extends to leadership and mentorship, shaping how students understand and live out the university’s mission. Joey Davenport ‘96, former men’s basketball player and current Samford student athlete parent, shared his perspective during a recent leadership meeting of Parent Advisory Board members and Parents Association State Chairs.
Davenport reflected on the contrast between his own experience as a student-athlete and that of his son, Cooper Davenport, who now represents Samford. “When I was here, I understood Samford’s mission,” Davenport said. “But watching my son, I see someone who truly knows what it means—and who lives it out every day through faith, character and community.”
At the meeting, Davenport continued to share a devotion and time of prayer, emphasizing that the heart of Samford Athletics goes far beyond competition. “This experience isn’t about athletic achievements—it’s about relationships,” Davenport said. “Our students need meaningful connections across every part of Samford, and those connections are what truly shape them.”
As Samford Athletics continues to strengthen partnerships with families, Pack the Pete Family Day is set for Friday, Feb. 28, featuring a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader at Pete Hanna Center. The event invites parents and supporters to come together for a full day of competition, community and shared tradition while cheering on Samford basketball.
