Samford University’s Recreation, Wellness and Athletics Complex—a dynamic $85 million reimagining of Seibert Hall—was recognized among the nation’s most outstanding facilities by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
The university’s four-story, 165,000-square-foot recreation complex features basketball, racquetball and pickleball courts, along with studios for spin classes, yoga, Pilates, Zumba and barre core. There are tonal strength stations, free weights, cardio and circuit training, turf areas, billiards, an elevated jogging track, a coffeehouse and a 24-hour market.
NIRSA’s outstanding facilities awards celebrate excellence in the innovative design of new, renovated, or expanded collegiate recreation and wellness facilities. These awards honor spaces that enhance the student experience, promote well-being and set new standards for excellence in campus recreation.
Featuring world-class facilities, expanded fitness programming and community gatherings, the Seibert Hall renovation was completed in September 2024. At the ribbon cutting, Samford President Beck A. Taylor said the facility proudly stands among the best in the nation and represents “a game-changer for Samford.” Seibert Hall saw nearly 273,000 user visits during its first year of operation and produced more than 8,000 student check-ins for classes.
The recreation complex was a key part of the vision to enrich campus life, shaped by Taylor and the Samford board of trustees. That master plan, known as Samford Horizons, included an innovative dining experience, four new residence halls that opened in 2025 and a 550-space parking deck.
