Our Music

Birmingham's Smooth Jazz

While "smooth jazz" has many connotations, here it means an eclectic blend of contemporary instrumentals, smart and soulful vocals, coming from the best traditions of jazz, R&B, rock and international music, all guided by input from our listeners. We feature the top musicians from around the world, plus homegrown local and regional artists. WVSU has been a proud supporter of Birmingham's rich jazz legacy since the 1980s.

Tuxedo Junction

Join host Bart Grooms, a member of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, for a musical journey through the history of jazz - America's native art form. From ragtime to big band, bebop to swing, Bart plays the latest and greatest traditional jazz, and will tell you something interesting about it in the process. Join us for Tuxedo Junction each weekday from 12-1 p.m., with a replay Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m.

New Urban Jazz Lounge

Keyboardist Bob Baldwin is the host of this two hour, weekly program, which blends contemporary jazz, with touches of urban and Brazilian flavors. The New Urban Jazz Lounge airs Fridays from 7-9 p.m., with a replay Sundays from 6-8 p.m.

Kim Scott's Block Party

By day, Kim is the chair of the music department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where she teaches flute. Other times, she is touring internationally, recording albums and producing this one-hour show that features urban, smooth, Latin jazz and jazz standards. Join the Block Party each Thursday from 5-6 p.m. and Sunday from 3-4 p.m.

In the Mood

Join Scott Michaels as he shares "the world's greatest record library" for two hours of the best of the big band era. Scott will transport you to the days when jazz was America's popular music, each Saturday from 8-10 a.m. and Sunday from 8-10 p.m.
