If You See an Armed Person on University Grounds

  • Remain calm and move away. Do not confront the person.
  • Call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020.
  • Describe the person’s clothing, actions, demeanor and direction of travel. If possible, describe the type of gun and the manner it is carried, any backpack or other bags.

If You See an Armed Person Enter a Building

  • Remain calm and move away. Do not enter the building.
  • Call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020.

Someone in My Room Has a Gun (Passive)

  • Remain calm.
  • Do you know the person with the gun?
  • Has his or her personality in the past caused you concern?
  • What is he or she doing?
  • How are they acting?
  • How is the weapon being carried?
  • What bags, if any, is the person carrying?
  • Were they seated when you arrived or did they come in after you?

Possible Actions

  • Excuse yourself and dismiss all others from the room. If you leave, do not reenter the room.
  • Monitor the person's behavior.
  • Verbally challenge the person.

Regardless of Your Decision

  • Call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020.
  • Identify the building and room number.
  • Describe the person, the location of the person in the room, what the person is doing, how the person is acting, and any additional information you can provide.
  • Identify an area where you can meet emergency personnel, preferably outside the building and out of view of the room.

Someone in My Room Has a Gun (Aggressive)

  • If you can, leave the room and encourage others to leave.
  • Refer to Active Shooter for guidance.
