The Samford parent leadership team is made up of Samford Parent Advisory Board members and leaders of the Samford Parents Association. These two groups work with the Office of Parent and Family Programs to strengthen the relationship between the university and the parents of undergraduate students.

The Samford Parent Advisory Board

The Samford University Parent Advisory Board (PAB) works to support the university’s Christian mission to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith and personhood. Board members have a first-hand understanding of the impact the university has on students and their families. Members seek to strengthen the relationship between the university and the parents of current undergraduate students; encourage relationships within the Samford family; positively represent the university to others; and financially support the university.

Qualifications

Parent Advisory Board members are passionate about supporting Samford University, have a currently enrolled undergraduate student, and serve for one year with the possibility of being asked to serve an additional year.

Responsibilities

As a Group

Annually, the Parent Advisory Board identifies at least one element of the university’s strategic plan (emphasizing student success; enhancing the Samford community; extending the university’s reach, or ensuring financial strength) that undergraduate parents will actively support and then leads in the implementation.

Individually

Parent Advisory Board members annually:

  • Attend—PAB members meet in the fall in conjunction with Family Weekend or Homecoming and in the spring in conjunction with Step Sing. Members are asked to attend both meetings.
  • Connect—PAB members connect Samford University with individuals and businesses within their sphere of influence as appropriate.
  • Give—PAB members make an annual gift to Samford University.
  • Host—PAB members help host or attend local university events such as Send Off Parties, Prospective Student Events, and local parent gatherings.
  • Learn—PAB members become deeply familiar with Samford University so they can share accurate information with others.
  • Listen—PAB members help the university know of and understand trends, concerns and support held by the parents of undergraduate students.
  • Pray—PAB members pray regularly for Samford University, the fulfillment of its mission and the people within the university family.
  • Support—PAB members are the core support for the Samford Parents Association and its officers.
  • Volunteer—PAB members volunteer to partner with and support the efforts of the Office of Parent and Family Programs in a variety of capacities.

Samford Parents Association Leaders

The Samford Parents Association (SPA) is made up of dedicated parents who, while affirming the mission of Samford University, support university goals; support the educational and developmental success of students; and seek to inform, support, and connect Samford parents and families. This group is led by association officers and state chapter chairs. Officers and state chapter chairs serve for a minimum of one year with the possibility of being asked to serve additional years.

Responsibilities

Samford Parents Association (SPA) officers annually:

  • Attend—SPA officers attend and conduct two leadership meetings per year, in conjunction with Family Weekend (or Homecoming) and Step Sing.
  • Connect—SPA officers lead efforts to connect Samford University parents with each other and the university.
  • Lead—SPA officers serve as leaders of the Samford Parents Association.
  • Listen—SPA officers listen to the parents of undergraduate students to help the university aware of support and concerns.
  • Participate—SPA officers participate in local university events such as Send Off Parties, Prospective Student Events, and local parent gatherings.
  • Plan—SPA officers plan and conduct the annual association breakfast.
  • Pray—SPA officers pray regularly for Samford University, the fulfillment of its mission and the people within the university family.
  • Prioritize—SPA officers lead the association to set annual goals and priorities.
  • Report—SPA officers submit an annual report to the Office of Parent and Family Programs.
  • Represent—SPA officers serve as a point of contact for the Office of Parent and Family Programs and represent the association to the university administration.
  • Volunteer—PAB members volunteer to partner with and support the efforts of the Office of Parent and Family Programs in a variety of capacities.

Samford State Parent Chapter Chairs annually:

  • Attend—State chapter chairs attend two leadership meetings per year, in conjunction with Family Weekend (or Homecoming) and Step Sing.
  • Connect—State chapter chairs connect with parents in their state.
  • Enlist—State chapter chairs enlist parents to participate in activities such as coffees, care package packing parties, note-writing campaigns, etc.
  • Oversee—State chapter chairs oversee their Family Weekend state tailgate.
  • Participate—State chapter chairs participate in annual Send Offs and admission events within their state as possible.
  • Plan—State chapter chairs plan events for Samford families in their state, one in the summer and two each fall and spring semester.
  • Pray—State chapter chairs pray regularly for Samford University, the fulfillment of its mission and the people within the university family.
  • Promote—State chapter chairs promote their activities in conjunction with the Office of Parent and Family Programs through the Samford Parent Portal and social media.
  • Report—State chapter chairs provide reports of their events and activities to the Office of Parent and Family Programs.
