On a cold, blustery January day in 1842, seven young men from central Alabama reported to Samuel Sterling Sherman as the inaugural class of Howard College in Marion, Alabama. Today more than 5,600 students from 44 states and 30 countries benefit each semester from Christian higher education through the 10 schools that make up Samford University.

Serving Children with Special Needs in Lebanon
It is estimated that over 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 450,000 displaced Palestinians have fled their homelands to seek shelter in Lebanon, causing refugee children to be absorbed into schools across the country. Over the past 14 years, Orlean Beeson School of Education faculty have worked to build a capacity of teachers in these schools to serve children with special needs.

Samford Wellness Kitchen Offers Teens Hands-On Cooking Experience
Hosted by the School of Public Health’s Samford Wellness Kitchen, 16 students attended the Summer Cooking Camp for Teens. Over the five days of camp, attendees received a crash course in basic cooking, knife skills, portion control, the science of nutrients and how to shop for locally grown foods that are in-season.

Mentors Open Doors to Unexpected Careers
Forrest Courtney came to Samford with thoughts of a career in law. Although he was a lifeguard, a career in the ocean would have seemed far-fetched. He didn’t like to wade past his waist on family visits to the beach. “I saw Jaws way too early,” he joked. Now the geography major is a certified professional diver and researcher with an impressive record of coral reef preservation.

Samford Women’s Track and Field Earns 2019 SoCon Outdoor Championship
Samford University’s women's track and field team won the 2019 Southern Conference Outdoor Championship, their first conference outdoor championships since 2017. The men’s team finished as narrow runner-up to Western Carolina. The competition was hosted on Samford’s campus at the track and field complex.
