Preparing to live on campus doesn't mean you need to bring everything from home! What you bring is ultimately up to you, but the list below includes items students commonly find helpful when living in a residence hall.

Before purchasing larger or shared items, talk with your roommate. Coordinating in advance can help save space and prevent duplicate items.

Bedding & Room Essentials

  • Twin XL sheets
  • Twin XL mattress topper or mattress pad
  • Pillow
  • Comforter
  • Blankets
  • Hangers
  • Under-bed/storage containers
  • Desk lamp
  • Small fan
  • Small air purifier
  • Limited pictures, décor, and personal items to help you feel at home
  • Command strips/hooks by 3M or similar products for hanging pictures and décor

Bathroom & Personal Care

  • Towels
  • Shower caddy
  • Shower shoes
  • Bath and toiletry supplies
  • Basic medications/prescriptions

Laundry & Cleaning

  • Laundry basket or hamper
  • Laundry detergent and other laundry supplies
  • Cleaning supplies, such as disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and a small broom/dustpan
  • Food/storage bags, such as Ziploc bags

Technology & School Supplies

  • Cell phone
  • Laptop/computer
  • Charging cables and charging blocks
  • Portable charger/power bank

Everyday Essentials

  • Important identification/documents, such as a driver's license or state ID and insurance card

Food & Kitchen Basics

Students may find it helpful to bring a few basic items for snacks and meals in their room:

  • Plate and bowl
  • Cup or mug
  • Eating utensils

Permitted Appliances

Students may bring the following appliances for use in their residence hall room. Because residence hall rooms have limited space and electrical capacity, roommates are strongly encouraged to coordinate before purchasing or bringing shared appliances.

  • Mini-refrigerator: Maximum capacity of 4.2 cubic feet
  • Microwave: Maximum 700 watts
  • Single-serve coffee maker: Keurig-style or similar single-serve coffee makers without an exposed heating element

What Not to Bring

For the safety of our residential community, the following items are not permitted in residence halls:

Fire & Cooking Hazards

  • Candles and candle warmers
  • Toasters and toaster ovens
  • Hot plates and portable burners
  • Electric skillets and griddles
  • Appliances with exposed heating coils, burners, or heating elements
  • Halogen lamps
  • Fireworks
  • Fire pits
  • Charcoal grills

Electrical & Transportation Items

  • Two-prong extension cords
  • Self-balancing scooters/hoverboards

Other Prohibited Items

  • Pets, except as permitted under applicable university policy
  • Weapons
  • Sharp knives
  • Alcoholic beverages and alcohol paraphernalia
  • Illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia
  • Full-sized furniture or other furniture that cannot be safely accommodated within the assigned room

Before You Buy: Coordinate With Your Roommate

Residence hall rooms have limited space, and there's usually no need for roommates to bring two of everything. Before move-in, talk with your roommate about who will bring shared items such as:

  • Television/streaming device
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Area rug
